The Asheville chapter of AAUW is one of the oldest branches in North Carolina (dating back to 1915) and now one of the largest (more than 140 members strong). We are leading advocates for education and equality for girls and women, both locally and nationally. Membership is open to anyone holding an associate or equivalent (RN), baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university. AAUW Asheville has members from diverse backgrounds and many parts of the world.
We gather throughout the year for informal lunches featuring speakers who discuss issues pertaining to women’s education and equality. We also offer monthly study or special interest groups that meet to discuss a variety of books, movies, and current events. We even have a gourmet dining group that features dishes of a different country every other month. These special interest groups are open to all members. Joining one or more of them is a wonderful way to meet new friends, participate in lively discussions, and maybe find someone who is familiar with your home town or college. https://asheville-nc.aauw.net/programs/
We strongly support the GEM Fund (Gaining Educational Momentum), which allows us to award (1)scholarships each year to local women who start college after age 23 or who want to finish an interrupted college education. Contributions to the GEM Fund are tax deductible. We also support national AAUW’s legal advocacy, education, and public policy programs.
The yearly dues of $96 includes $59 sent to national AAUW, which is tax deductible. As members of the national association, there are additional benefits. Our local dues are $13.00 and the state dues are $11.00 (link to aauwnc.org). Our mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy
